Proper Care of Contact LensesMany people prefer using contact lenses instead of glasses for many reasons. Some people don't think they look good in glasses (they make them look too bookish). Some people find glasses uncomfortable and too heavy for their face. Some people are bad at misplacing their glasses. Some people just like the convenience of wearing contact lenses.
But contact lenses do take more care than glasses do. If you decide to change from wearing prescription glasses to contact lenses you should first consider if you are up to the extra time and work involved. If you are then, speak to your eye doctor about being fitted for a pair.
Here are a few things a first time wearer of contact lenses should remember.
How to take care of them properly. If you don't take proper care of your contact lenses you are inviting germs into your eyes and this can led to painful infection.
1. Always wash your hands before handling your contact lenses.
2. Regularly clean your lenses.
3. Store lenses in a clean place. Replace your lenses every 3 months.
4. Only use recommended cleaning agents for your lenses. You can discuss these agents with your eye doctor.
5. Never reuse old solution. Throw it out after using, every time. It is full of germs.
6. When your doctor prescribes you a new pair of contact lenses, throw away your old pair. These are easy steps to remember. But how easy is it to put contacts into your eyes and then to take them back out of your eyes. Here are a few pointers.
Putting your contacts in:
1. Wash your hands before beginning.
2. Hold one lens on the top of your index finger of the hand you write with
3. Pull your lower eyelid down with your middle finger of the same hand. Then pull your top lid up with your index finger of your other hand.
4. Look upward
5. Place the lens gently on the lower white of your eye.
6. Remove your index finger and release your finger
7. Close your eye for a moment. This will allow the lens to center itself.
8. Repeat the same procedure with your other eye.
Now here are a few steps to take when taking out your contact lens
1. Again, start by washing your hands.
2. Look up and then pull your lower lid down with the middle finger
3. Place your index finger on the lower edge of the lens (using the same hand)
4. Slide the lens down to the white of your eye.
5. Squeeze the lens down gently between your index finger and thumb, gently remove it.
6. Repeat in the same fashion for your other eye.
Yes, it is that easy. When you first learn how to do this, take calm deep breaths and relax.
You should also be sure to take special care in cleaning your lenses. When cleaning them, read all the instructions that came with your cleaning agent. A good rule of thumb is to rinse each side of the lens. Then place your lens in a clean contact lens case. Fill the case with fresh solution. Soak for the specified amount of time that the instructions say. Most importantly remember to change your lenses every three months.
By taking the extra care you and your eyes will be able to see more clearly and enjoy your new lenses. Good luck.
